Surat Al-An'am- Lesson (12-73)- Ayat 39-45: Allah's Policy Towards Mankind

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Dear brothers, this is lesson No. 12 of interpreting Surat Al-An'am.
The difference between the believer and the disbeliever is like the one between the living and the dead:
I will start with Ayah No. 40 which goes as follows:

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) : "Tell me if Allah's Torment comes upon you, or the Hour comes upon you, would you then call upon any one other than Allah? (Reply) if you are truthful!" ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 40 ]

The following is the Ayah which precedes it:

﴾ Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) are deaf and dumb in darkness. Allah sends astray whom He wills and He guides on the Straight Path whom He wills.﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

Dear brothers, like we have darkness and light in physical world, we have blind man and a man endued with insight in the world of faith. If we go further than that in describing that blind man, we will find that he is not only blind and can't see the truth but also he is deaf from listening to the truth and mute towards passing it.

﴾ (They are) dead, lifeless. ﴿

[  An-Nahl, 21 ]

Difference between believers and disbelievers is like difference between the living and the dead:

﴾ (They are) dead, lifeless. ﴿

In another Ayah, Allah says:

﴾ But you cannot make hear those who are in graves.   ﴿

[ Fatir, 22 ]

Definition of life and death according to faith:

A very famous western physicist (Einstein) said once, "The one who can't see the Omnipotent, Merciful, Knowledgeable and Wise Power in this universe (i.e. Allah) is definitely a living dead." A poet expressed this meaning in the following verses:

The dead man is not whoever finds rest in dying

But he is the living dead

A man might be very young, energetic and active, yet in the Sight of Allah he is dead, whereas another man, who is afflicted with all sorts of diseases, is alive in the Sight of Allah and is in his peak of faith-oriented activity.

Dear brothers, the real meaning of life and death in the world of faith is to know Allah (alive) or to be heedless (dead), it is to establish a connection with Allah, or to be disconnected and far from Him, it is to offer a good deed or commit an evil one, it is to turn to Allah or to turn away from Him and it is to be upright or to be corrupted. Man's physical existence of man is similar to the one of any other creatures, but his humane existence is manifested in believing, in getting acquainted with his Lord, in knowing the secret and the purpose of his existence and in moving in life according to the destiny he is created for. Hence:

﴾ Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 39 ]

Some of those (as described in the previous Ayah) have ears for music and singers, and they can tell the difference between this or that performer, and the alive among them or the dead. However, they close their ears from listening to the truth, and they have eloquent tongues with which they can say outstanding lines of flirting poetry and the like, but they are mute when it comes to passing the word of truth. Let alone,  they forge alliance with Kuffar and Mushrikeen, so they become silent from speaking out the truth. This is the meaning of the Ayah:

﴾ Are deaf and dumb  ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 39 ]

This means that they do not listen to the truth.

There are three open ways to know Allah:

Allah the Almighty says:

﴾  And when they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe," but when they are alone with their Shayatin (devils - polytheists, hypocrites, etc.), they say: "Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking."   ﴿

[  Al-Baqarah, 14 ]

The meaning of deaf is not listening to the truth, and the deaf person makes his desires a veil between him and Allah. Actually, loving something makes man deaf and dumb, and the deaf and dumb make their desires, interests, pleasures, lusts and instincts a veil between them and Allah. They are deaf from listening to the truth even though the waves of the word of truth might reach their ear-drum, but they are unable to listen to it, lest they would haste to apply the truth, would translate what they listen  into actions, would discipline themselves, would abide by the truth and would offer a good deed.

﴾ Those who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

In fact, the only path to know Allah is His Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and the proof is in the following Ayah:

﴾ Then in which speech after Allah and His Ayat will they believe?  ﴿

[ Al-Jathiyah, 6 ]

There is no way to know Allah but through the Hints He leaves for us in this universe, His Actions and His Words (Quran). These are the only clear paths to know Allah. Therefore, in order to know Allah you should ponder over the Divine Signs in the universe, the Words of Quran and the Divine Actions, whereas those who are referred to in the Ayah below do none of that:

﴾ Are deaf and dumb ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

They are also blind:

﴾ In darkness. ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

How huge is the difference between not having eyes (blind) or being in a dark place on the one hand and having eyes which are not used to see the truth on the other hand. In the first case the blind and the one who sits in the dark are in the same situation since  both of them can see nothing, because the eye can't function without light. In the above-mentioned Ayah, this heedless person does not see the truth, does not listen to the truth and does not speak out the word of truth.

﴾ In darkness. Allah sends astray whom He wills and He guides on the Straight Path whom He wills. ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

In fact, Allah's Will works according to man's deeds.

Introductions are followed by results:

Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ And Allah guides not the people who disbelieve. ﴿

[ An-Nahl, 107 ]

He also says:

﴾ Allah guides not the people who are the Fasiqin (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). ﴿

[ Al-Munafiqun, 6 ]

As long as they are indulged in debauchery, oppression or Kufr, they definitely have deviated from guidance. Consider the situation of the front door in this Masjid; as long as it is closed, keeping the inside doors open or closed is the same. In other words, no one will enter the Masjid, because the front door is closed. Similarly, as long as the sinners make fulfilling their forbidden lusts a veil between them and Allah, they will keep blind, deaf and dumb towards the truth. Accordingly, they are the ones who close that outer door and draw a veil between them and Allah as if they seek misguidance.

In order to elaborate more, let me give you an example. Every county has rules for appointing employees, so if a country requires a high scientific degree to hire someone in a position, and employment is the most demandable jobs in this county, the young man who stops studying willingly and intentionally will seem to have chosen poverty, homelessness and unemployment, given the only way to get a job in this country is to acquire a high scientific degree. The same goes for the one who chooses to become a robber and criminal; when he is apprehended and executed for his crimes, he will seems to have chosen willingly to end his life like that. . Hence, every introduction leads to results, and every path you choose will have its results. In the following Ayah, eloquence is used in expressing the heedless' choice:

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

This means Allah sends astray the one who chooses to become astray. Therefore, when man fornicates,  eats usury, steals, turns away from Allah's Method or abandons the principles of his Fitrah willingly, the results are inevitable, because these introductions lead to well-known results. Thus, whosoever chooses a certain introduction is actually choosing the results.

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

On the other hand, this Ayah indicates the opposite meaning; whosoever wills to be under the Shade of Allah the Almighty, wills to make his daily life according to Allah's Method, wills to seek religious knowledge, wills to abide by it, wills to offer good deeds for the Sake of Allah, wills to be guided and wills to be on the Straight Path of Allah, wills to be guided by Allah. Hence, this ayah indicates that there are laws in the universe, and one of them is that introductions lead to results.
Fatalism is the creed which has paralyzed the Islamic Ummah:
A doctor met a man who happened to be a heavy smoker, so he said to him, "Smoking will cause you a clot (which will lead to a brain or heart stroke)". This doctor (who is a cardiologist) swore by Allah to me that very man came to him six months later with a heart stroke. This doctor does not know the unseen, but he is fully aware that certain introductions or actions lead to certain results.

Another heart surgeon swore by Allah to me saying, "I operate almost every day on hearts, and I swear by Allah that every one of these operations is done to a smoker". Therefore, when man becomes a heavy smoker, and is informed by a doctor that this will cause him  a stroke, and he does not stop smoking, he has chosen  to have a stroke, because these introductions lead to these results. This is exactly the meaning of the following Ayah:

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills and He guides on the Straight Path whom He wills.  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

I am addressing you, including myself, beware of accusing Allah of compelling his servants to disobey Him, may Allah be Exalted above such an accusation.

﴾ Say: "Nay, Allah never commands of Fahisha. Do you say of Allah what you know not?  ﴿

[ Al-A'raf, 28 ]

Fatalism (believing that Allah imposed action on his servants, and that they do not have the free will) made this Ummah (Islamic nation) paralyzed and lagged behind other nations.
He threw him in the sea with his hands tied up and said to him:
"Beware! Beware! Never get wet by seawater!"
The Almighty Allah says:

﴾ Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve.  ﴿

[  Al-Kahf, 29 ]

Some Ayat that indicate the Greatness of Allah:

I meant to elaborate and shed light on this point, so that no one will claim that Allah leads people astray referring to the following Ayah as a proof (this is how people misunderstand the Ayah):

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

Why would Allah lead any of His servants astray? Allah is a Great Lord (He would not compel His servants to do anything against their free will), and the proof is in the following Ayat:

﴾ And never do We requit in such a way except those who are ungrateful, (disbelievers). ﴿

[ Saba', 17 ]

Allah is Great:

﴾  So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it* And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. ﴿

[ Az-Zalzalah, 7-8 ]

The Great Allah says:

﴾ Is then he who is a believer like him who is Fasiq (disbeliever and disobedient to Allah)? Not equal are they. ﴿

[ As-Sajdah, 18 ]

The Great Allah also says:

﴾ Shall We then treat the (submitting) Muslims like the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists and disbelievers, etc.)?* What is the matter with you? How judge you? ﴿

[ Al-Qalam, 35-36 ]

Allah also says:

﴾ Is he whom We have promised an excellent promise (Paradise), which he will find true, like him whom We have made to enjoy the luxuries of the life of (this) world, then on the Day of Resurrection, he will be among those brought up (to be punished in the Hell-fire)?  ﴿

[ Al-Qasas, 61 ]

In another Ayah, Allah the Great says:

﴾ Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and after their death? Worst is the judgement that they make.   ﴿

[  Al-Jathiyah, 21 ]

We should understand Quran's Ayat as Allah wills:
Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ For every nation there is a direction to which they face (in their prayers). So hasten towards all that is good ﴿

[  Al-Baqarah, 148 ]

Allah also says:

﴾ Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.  ﴿

[  Al-Insan, 3 ]

In another Ayah, Allah says:

﴾ Those who took partners (in worship) with Allah will say: "If Allah had willed, we would not have taken partners (in worship) with Him, nor would our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything (against His Will)." Likewise belied those who were before them, (they argued falsely with Allah's Messengers), till they tasted of Our Wrath. Say: "Have you any knowledge (proof) that you can produce before us? Verily, you follow nothing but guess and you do nothing but lie."  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 148 ]

We should not interpret these Ayat in a way that opposes the Intention of Allah the Almighty:

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 39 ]

As I mentioned earlier, this Ayah means that whoever follows the steps towards heedlessness, will inevitably go astray. On the other hand, whoever follows the steps towards salvation and prosperity, will achieve what he heads for, which is success on all levels whether in the Hereafter or in the worldly life. In civil society, the upright citizen never breaks the laws, he pays his taxes and he is free and not wanted by the authorities (for any crime), whereas the one who breaks the laws and commits crimes will end up in jail in any civil society. Can anyone say that the authorities compelled this citizen to commit crimes and put him in jail accordingly? This is rather impossible, because no government would do that, and to him who would claim that we say, "You are in jail because you commit a murder." It is a cause-and-effect situation. Hence:

﴾ Allah sends astray whom He wills and He guides on the Straight Path whom He wills. ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 39 ]

The following Ayah indicates clearly that faith is Divinely installed in mankind:
The following Ayah proves that faith is Divinely installed in man. A group of experts, who were from a communist country which does not believe in Allah (they are atheists), were on a flight once, and the plane flew through an electrified cloud, so it was shaken, and it was close to crash. Surprisingly, those atheist experts said, "O Allah". This means that faith is something natural in man, and this is the exact meaning which is indicated a lot in the Quran. No matter how deviated, debaucherous and immoral man might be, when he is in danger, he resorts to Allah and says, "O Allah". Allah says:

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) : "Tell me if Allah's Torment comes upon you, or the Hour comes upon you, would you then call upon any one other than Allah? (Reply) if you are truthful!" ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 40 ]

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) : "Tell me if  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 40 ]

This means, "Tell me if you see with your own eyes".

In an Islamic country and following a very destructive earthquake, the Masajid became full of people at times of prayers, and this reflects understanding their lesson after the earthquake, and they knew that it was a Divine Punishment for all their deviations, debaucheries and dissoluteness. Therefore, faith is installed Divinely in each and every one of us.

A man might adopt secularity and pretend to be an objective person who believes only in science, and who accuses religion of being mythical, hazy, metaphysical, traditional and conventional in its reality. Yet, the minute he is afflicted with a cancerous tumor, and after reading the medical report, he will resort to Allah and say, "O Allah, I have no helper but You". He changes his status 180 degrees at once. In fact, it is recommended to say so when you are strong, healthy and sound, and here lies your success. Submitting to Allah after calamities is the compulsory kind of submission. Submitting to Allah by saying, "There is no Lord but You, O Allah" when you are free, healthy, strong, rich and young, and when you have no complaints, is the success itself. On the other hand, submitting to Allah and saying, "O Lord (You are my only resort" after a cancerous tumor, kidney's failure or liver cirrhosis is something inevitable, but it is the endurance of the compelled. How beautiful it is to know Allah in prosperity, and how beautiful it is to resort to Allah while you are healthy and strong.

We should know Allah in prosperity not after adversities:

By Allah dear brothers, I know many brothers who are very good from inside; however, they turned to Allah after calamities befell them. Returning to Allah is great, because whoever does not learn the lesson from calamities and disasters, the greatest disaster is within himself.

A man was very far from Allah, and suddenly he had a heart attack while he was in his best shapes of strength, richness and relations. He was taken to the hospital and was admitted in the ICU, and when he thought that he was so close to death, and that he might never go back home, he invoked Allah and said, "O Lord, do you want me to meet you naked? Give me another chance, so that I would turn to you with repentance".

Allah gave him that chance, and he became a changed religious person and tasted the sweetness of being close to Allah. He said to me once, "In one of the hours of serenity I said to Allah, 'O Lord all this happiness because of that heart attack?' My repentance is a result of that disease; I wish I got that heart attack ten years earlier." Allah sometimes intervenes to the advantage of His servant, for the latter might be in a status of heedlessness, sinning and distraction, he might be driven by the vanity of the worldly life, and he might be indulged in worshipping money and lusts, and amid all that if something happens to him and prevents him from all these pleasures, he wakes up and repents to Allah. Allah says:

﴾ And a barrier will be set between them and that which they desire [i.e. At-Taubah (turning to Allah in repentance) and the accepting of Faith etc.]  ﴿

[  Saba', 54 ]

When something happens to man and prevents him from fulfilling his forbidden lusts, he will know that Allah is the Haqq. I hope dear brothers that you, including myself, will be able to know Allah in prosperity, which expresses your exalted status, unlike knowing Him after being afflicted with calamities. Anyway, knowing Allah after hardship is a good thing, but the difference is very big between the one who knows Allah in  prosperity and the one who knows Him in adversity.

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) : "Tell me if  ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 40 ]

It means, "Tell me if (you see yourself)."

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) : "Tell me if Allah's Torment comes upon you, or the Hour comes upon you, would you then call upon any one other than Allah? (Reply) if you are truthful!" ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 40 ]

This is the Divinely installed faith in man. Man eventually will believe in Allah, but this belief might happen when it is too late, and so  it will be worthless. I assure you dear brothers, that every soul on earth among the 7 billion people will believe at its hour of death in everything conveyed to us by the Prophets, peace be upon them, but this kind of belief will do man no good. Therefore, believing is just a matter of time (in the sense that either you believe early or you believe late.).
When you resort to Allah in your prosperity, you are one of the most powerful people:
Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ Nay! To Him Alone you call, and, if He will, He would remove that (distress) for which you call upon Him, and you forget at that time whatever partners you joined with Him (in worship)! ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 41 ]

﴾ Nay! To Him Alone you call,  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 41 ]

Tawheed is installed deeply in man, but it is not reflected until man is in hardship, for man in his prosperity would resort to this or that man, and to such or such party, and he would take pride in his richness, expertise and kinship. However, when calamities befall him, he would resort to Allah and says, "O Lord, I have none to resort to but You". Hence, when you resort to Allah in your prosperity, you are considered the most powerful, the most knowledgeable, the richest and the wisest man on earth. Generally speaking man resorts to Allah during hardships.

﴾ Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad PBUH). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility. ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 42 ]

Some nations are Divinely disciplined (as mentioned in the previous Ayah), because they deviated from the right path, they spread mischief, they joined partners with Allah (in worship), they disbelieved in Him and even denied His Existence. Allah punished them, because they originally created to worship Him, to know Him and to be admitted to Paradise, for Allah created every soul to bestow happiness upon it.

﴾ Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy (the follower of truth - Islamic Monotheism) and for that did He create them. ﴿

[ Hud, 119 ]

Because those nations, who were afflicted with hardship and calamities, turned away from Allah the Almighty, Allah made these afflictions as means of disciplining them.

The Divine Policy towards  mankind has four stages:

All of you dear brothers know that Allah's Process in treating His servants goes through four stages. The first stage is the kindest, the most peaceful and the most merciful one, which is to call you to Him by words. It is manifested when you, for instance, listen to a religious lesson, attend Khutbah, read a religious book, listen to a cassette of religious session, hear a sermon or receive advice while you are a full health, when you are strong and rich, and when you have no problems in life. This stage is the verbal Da'wah which is the kindest, the most perfect and the gentlest one, and the right stance man can take towards it is to respond to Allah.

﴾ O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life ﴿

[ Al-Anfal, 24 ]

You are asked to respond to Allah in order to live the life you are created for, in order to bring life to your heart and in order to taste the sweetness of being close to Allah, but when man refuses to respond to Allah or react to His Call, Allah will discipline him by afflicting him with hardship, and this stage is called the awaking Divine Discipline.

﴾ And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment (i.e. the torment in the life of this world, i.e. disasters, calamities, etc.) prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may (repent and) return (i.e. accept Islam).  ﴿

[ As-Sajdah, 21 ]

You should respond to Allah in the first stage (the verbal Da'wah), and you should turn to Allah with repentance after the second stage (the awaking Divine Discipline). If man does not turn to Allah with repentance, nor does he respond to Him, he will be Divinely treated according to the third stage which is very dangerous, and it is called Al-Ikram Al-Istidragee (testing man by giving him lots of graces). In this stage man will be given the world, and he will have money, health, respectful position and a lot of relations, and if he does not thank Allah despite having all these graces, Allah will treat him according to the last stage which is destruction, and it is the last resort.

Let me repeat again: The first stage is the verbal Da'wah to Allah and man's best stance towards it is to respond to Allah, after that there is the educational Divine Discipline and man's best stance towards it is to repent, then there is the third stage which is Al-Ikram Al-Istidragee, and man's best stance towards it is to be thankful to Allah, but after all that if man does not respond, does not repent nor does he thank Allah, he will be Divinely destroyed.
As long as adversities are our motivations to turn to Allah, we are blessed:
Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 44 ]

The western world now is rich, powerful, haughty, arrogant, and smart, it leads luxurious life and it practices the is a double standard policy world:

﴾ So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 44 ]

This is exactly what is called "Al-Ikram Al-Istidgragee"; they have money, women and very beautiful countries, yet they are oppressors and haughty.

﴾ Until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows. ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 44 ]

As long as we are included in the Divine Care, as long as calamities befall  us to stimulate us to turn back to Allah and as long as there are fear of Allah, mercy, justice, honesty, trustworthiness, chastity and love while we are alive, these  are graces even though they are just traces, because they reflect the existence of the living heart.

When the doctor wants to make sure that the patient is dead, he holds his hand first to check his pulse, and if he finds no pulse due to a weak heart, he brings a mirror and he puts it under  the patient's nose to see if there is vapor made by his breath, and in case he finds nothing, he brings a light and focuses it on the patient's eyes, so if he notices pupil constriction, then the man is still alive but if there is none, then he says to the family of the patient, "May Allah rest his soul, he died." This is the condition of those who were Divinely notified in different ways, yet they did not respond, so as a result Allah brings them to their doom.

Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad PBUH). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility.  ﴿

[  Al-An'am, 42 ]

This is the educational Divine Discipline:

﴾ When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 43 ]

Our success lies in refraining from reaching a dead end with Allah:

The devastating earthquake which happened in East Asia was a Divine Punishment and Discipline, since those shores were full of corruption, debauchery, and all sorts of sins which are forbidden in all three Divine religions. Not to mention, 800.000 boys were used for fornication. Nevertheless, earthy oriented people will reject the religious perspective, preferring the scientific one which viewed Tsunami as the result of the collision between two earth plates. Such people  refuse the transcendent Tawheed oriented analysis and accept the polytheistic earthy oriented explanation. Hence:

﴾ When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do* So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows. ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 43-44 ]

The drug addicted people- I take refuge with Allah from that- buy very expensive drugs, and they take them in order to fly in ecstasy and become high, but as a result, they lose their lives because of overdose, so amid their richness, power, control of things, lusts and desires, they find themselves in the Grip of Allah the Almighty. Your success lies in not ending in a deadend road with Allah.

When man dies, his intention is what counts:

Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad PBUH). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility* When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitan (Satan) made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do* So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows. ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 42-44 ]

Let me make this point clear to you;  I mentioned so many times that not all the people who died in Tsunami are disbelievers, for every person dies according to his own intention:

(( Umm Salamah narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) mentioned the army that the earth would swallow, so Umm Salamah said: 'Perhaps there are those among them who are averse to it. He said: They will be resurrected on their intentions. ))

[ Al-Baihaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman by Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her ]

There is one more thing mentioned in the Hadith, and we should remember that generalization reflects blindness. Hence, whoever dies in disasters is not necessarily a disbeliever, for there are believers and disbelievers among the causalities, and the same disaster which befalls people can be  a punishment to some of them, a test to another group and a means to exalt some people in the Sight of Allah.

The cycle of the truth and falsehood is longer than man's lifetime:

Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ So the roots of the people who did wrong were cut off. And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns, and all that exists).  ﴿

[ Al-An'am, 45 ]

The result of such oppression is very devastating. Allah the Almighty says:

﴾ Say (O Muhammad PBUH) to those who disbelieve: "You will be defeated.  ﴿

[  Aal-'Imran, 12 ]

Keep in mind that the cycle of truth and falsehood might last longer than man's lifetime (to be completed i.e. to see the truth defeats falsehood). Allah addresses His Prophet PBUH by saying:

﴾ Whether We show you (in your lifetime, O Muhammad PBUH) some of what We promise them (the torment), - or We cause you to die, ﴿

[ Yunus, 46 ]

This means that even the Prophet PBUH, who is the Master of mankind and the beloved to Al-Haqq (Allah), might not see the Divine Victory with his own eyes. As for us, we are believers and we should be patient.  I ask Allah the Almighty to protect us and to protect our countries from any adversity.
